MOSS 2007 – Step by Step – Table of Content

In this post, we’ll enable Network Load Balancing between WFE1 and WFE2 and ensure it works for IIS Default Web Site.
Open Local Area Connection properties on both WFE1 and WFE2… and select Network Load Balancing.

image

Click Properties. Type in the following IP addresses (on both WFE1 and WFE2)… and confirm that Multicast is selected

image

Switch to Host Parameters tab on WFE1… and type in the following. Set the Priority to 1.

image

Switch to Host Parameters tab on WFE2… and type in the following. Set the Priority to 2.

image

Switch back to WFE1 now. Start –> Run –> Type nlbmgr.exe
Right click on Network Load Balancing Clusters and select New Cluster

image

Ensure that the screen looks like this…

image

10.0.0.10 is a Virtual IP in the screen above. After you have confirmed all the settings, click Next thrice until you see the following dialog… Type Host = WFE1 and click Connect

image

Click Next… confirm the parameters… and click Finish.

image

After a few seconds, you should see that the Node is added and it should become green.

image

Right click on nlb.dotnetscraps.com and select “Add Host to cluster”.

image

Type WFE2 and click connect. Since we are working with images, you will see an issue as follows.

image

Go to Device Manager and uninstall Network Adapters from WFE2. Reboot and reinstall the adapter when prompted.

 image

Once the driver is re-installed, repeat the steps for WFE2.
This time, if you try to connect to WFE2, you should be able to.

image

Click Next and select Priority to 2. Click Finish

image

If everything goes smoothly, you should have a cluster setup and working fine by now…

image

Go to the machine – DC and open Internet Explorer.
Browse to http://10.0.0.10/pagerror.gif and you should be able to see the graphic.

image

On your WFE1 machine, you will have full control to the end clients… you can Start, Stop, Drainstop, Suspend and Resume all your traffic now.

image

If you stop both WFE1 and WFE2, you would see an error message.

image

The moment you start any server (WFE1 or WFE2), the traffic starts flowing.
Now that we have NLB setup, we will finally proceed towards SharePoint installation.

Next step would be to install SQL and SharePoint binaries on all the machines WFE1, WFE2 and AS.

We will discuss about it in the next post. Stay tuned…
